Fergesen Design Releases Food-Safe Label Coatings for Digital Print and Flexographic Finishing
Hillsborough, New Jersey - October 18, 2010 - Specialty benzophenone-free, high-gloss and matte label coatings for food, wine, pharmaceuticals and chemicals have been developed by Fergesen Design Co, Inc. and are now being used in label production with a Hewlett Packard WS 4500 digital label press with an offline Rotoflex/ Mark Andy Vericut finishing system.
Fergesen Design was contacted via web site (www.FergesenDesign.com) by the label manufacturer to sort out difficulties with their existing coating, digital label press, and flexographic finishing system. The prior coating the label manufacturer rejected was unstable in the can and had the wrong application characteristics for the flexographic application process used in the Rotoflex unit. After testing the faulty coating and determining from HP, Rotoflex/Mark Andy and AAA Press Accessories what was necessary to meet the label manufacturer's requirements, Fergesen Design's laboratory developed two coatings for them.
These coatings are Fergesen Design FDX 1058 gloss and FDX 1059 matte. These coatings are designed to be used on metallized foil paper, semi-gloss paper, 2 mil clear BOPP and 3-mil MDO, after printing with HP inks on their WS 4500 digital press. Printed label stock is then taken to the Rotoflex (recently purchased by Mark Andy) Vericut finishing system. This unit has the following key components: unwind, flexographic coating station, die cutting station and rewind. It is an offline system capable of operating at 300 FPM and coats an 8 to 13 inch width printed web.
Based on the requirements of the label manufacturer's customer, the coated printed sheet must withstand abrasion, solvent, and heat resistance necessary to meet food, wine, pharmaceutical and chemical requirements. This must be accomplished with both a gloss coating and matte finish coating. Also the coating must meet European food and drug requirements and be benzophenone free.
After a year of review and testing, the label manufacturer has approved the coatings for all aspects of their unique process and reached complete customer satisfaction for the finished label.
