Mission

Fergesen Design Company's mission is to make our customers more successful by solving production line problems with inks, coatings and adhesives, specializing in chemical technologies which employ minimal solvents.

History

David Fergesen founded the Fergesen Design Company, Inc. in 1981 with the goal of providing environmentally safe, worker friendly coatings, inks, adhesives and application systems. For the past 25 years, Fergesen Design Company, Inc. has solved production line problems for industry with inks, coatings, adhesives and other custom formulated chemical compounds, specializing in water based, hot melt and ultraviolet (UV) and other radiation (IR, EB) curing technologies which employ minimal solvents.

Fergesen Design has formulated proprietary materials and designed equipment for leading edge technology, for example:

  • Developed UV lamp intensity indicator technology to improve ability to monitor lamp performance with Interactive Intelligent Imagery Corp.
  • Formulated durable UV inks and coatings for printing on plastic credit cards for Sillcocks Plastics.
  • Installed a production line to affix electronics wiring with adhesive cured with a UV wand for Allied Signal.
  • Developed a production process for UV pressure sensitive adhesive for use in medical applications for Johnson & Johnson.
  • Formulated some of the earliest UV inks for screenprinting for Grafika Commercial Printing.
  • Designed curing equipment and created processes to convert offset presses for application of UV inks and coatings.
  • Designed and installed a system for lamination of glass into solar photovoltaic cells.
  • Developed infrared drying systems for narrow and wide-web presses.
  • Created proprietary UV coatings that are compatible with a wider range of inks.
  • Developed proprietary coatings compatible with digital toner and inkjet presses --a Fergesen Design proprietary water-based coating formulation was recently approved for the Nexpress, a toner based press developed by Canon and recently acquired by Kodak Solutions.

Mr. Fergesen entered the industrial chemical field in 1961 with a Cornell College B.S. in Chemistry. Since then, with the exception of a four year tour of duty in the U.S. Army, he has worked in polymer chemistry where his emphasis has been inks, coatings and adhesives. Early work included many specialty adhesives formulations, two of which are patented. He also worked on a low-shrink paint for NASA's satellite launcher. He provided industrial training on Radiation Curing throughout the 1980's, and was active in founding RadTech, the industry forum on ultraviolet, infrared and electron beam technologies.

In 2004, Robert Fergesen rejoined Fergesen Design as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Although Robert worked for Fergesen Design early in his career, his experience in the last 15 years has been in the manufacturing industries, assisting in systems sales, design and implementations all over the world. As both a mechanical engineer, and with his background in sales and manufacturing, he now provides Fergesen Design with increased custom solution expertise that will give our customers a broader range of solutions than ever before.
